What Is EFT Tapping?

Where Acupressure Meets Modern Psychology

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), commonly called "tapping," is a clinically validated therapeutic method developed by Gary Craig in the 1990s, building on earlier work by Dr. Roger Callahan. It works by combining two things: focused attention on a specific emotional or physical problem, and gentle rhythmic tapping on a sequence of acupressure points on the body.

The theory โ€” supported by a growing body of research โ€” is that emotional distress is caused by disruptions in the body's energy system. Tapping on specific meridian endpoints while verbally acknowledging the problem sends calming signals directly to the brain's stress centers (particularly the amygdala), reducing the emotional charge around a memory, fear, or physical sensation.

At Alternative Solutions Counseling, EFT is used as a standalone technique and as a complement to EMDR, CBT, and trauma therapy โ€” often accelerating results that would take longer through talk-based approaches alone.

What EFT Tapping Can Help With

EFT Works Across a Wide Range of Issues

EFT was originally developed for anxiety and trauma, but decades of research and clinical experience have expanded its application considerably. If there's an emotional charge attached to it, EFT can address it.

๐Ÿ˜ฐ
Anxiety & Panic

Rapidly reduce the intensity of acute anxiety and panic โ€” including the physical symptoms like racing heart, chest tightness, and shortness of breath โ€” often within a single session.

๐Ÿ’”
Trauma & PTSD

Process and desensitize traumatic memories gently, without requiring detailed verbal re-narration. Often used alongside EMDR for comprehensive trauma work.

๐Ÿ˜”
Depression & Emotional Blocks

Release the stuck emotional energy beneath persistent sadness, hopelessness, and the "I can't feel anything good" flatness that depression creates.

๐ŸŽฏ
Phobias & Specific Fears

Desensitize specific fear triggers โ€” flying, needles, public speaking, spiders โ€” often faster than traditional exposure therapy and without the same level of distress.

๐Ÿ’ข
Anger & Emotional Flooding

Interrupt the body's stress response in real time, reduce the intensity of anger and reactivity, and access the calmer, more rational part of you beneath the escalation.

๐ŸŒฟ
Stress, Burnout & Physical Symptoms

Address the emotional root of chronic stress, tension headaches, fatigue, and psychosomatic symptoms โ€” where the mind-body connection has been disrupted by accumulated pressure.

The EFT Process

What Happens in an EFT Tapping Session

A session follows a clear, repeatable structure. Once you've learned it in session, you can use it independently anytime โ€” making EFT one of the most practical self-help tools available.

Identify the Issue

We focus on a specific problem โ€” a fear, memory, physical sensation, or emotional block โ€” and rate its intensity on a 0โ€“10 scale (Subjective Units of Distress, or SUDS).

The Setup Statement

You acknowledge the problem while affirming self-acceptance: "Even though I have this [fear / pain / feeling], I deeply and completely accept myself." Repeated three times while tapping the side of the hand.

Tapping the Sequence

You tap on each of the 8 meridian points in sequence โ€” eyebrow, side of eye, under eye, under nose, chin, collarbone, under arm, top of head โ€” while voicing a reminder phrase about the issue.

Check the SUDS Score

After each round, we re-rate the distress level. Most clients see the number drop significantly within 2โ€“3 rounds, which is one of the most powerful things to experience firsthand.

Shift to Positive

Once distress is reduced, the language shifts from problem-focused to empowerment-focused โ€” installing new, positive beliefs and feelings in place of the old ones.

Learn to Self-Apply

You leave every session knowing exactly how to use EFT on your own โ€” between sessions, in stressful moments, and long after therapy ends. It becomes a skill you keep for life.

Why EFT?

Why Clients Choose EFT Tapping

  • โšก
    Rapid Distress Reduction

Many clients experience a measurable drop in emotional intensity within a single session โ€” sometimes within a single round of tapping. The SUDS score drop is often visible in real time.

  • ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ
    Minimal Verbal Disclosure Required

Unlike talk therapy, EFT doesn't require you to fully re-narrate painful experiences. You can work at the level of feeling and sensation, which many people find far less re-traumatizing.

  • ๐Ÿ
    A Tool You Take Home

EFT is one of the few therapeutic techniques you can self-administer effectively. Clients leave with a skill they can use for the rest of their lives โ€” at any moment of stress or overwhelm.

  • ๐Ÿ”ฌ
    Growing Research Base

EFT has been validated in over 100 published studies covering anxiety, PTSD, depression, phobias, and physical pain โ€” with a consistent effect size that meets APA standards for evidence-based treatment.

  • ๐Ÿค
    Works With Other Therapies

EFT integrates seamlessly with EMDR, CBT, trauma therapy, and hypnotherapy โ€” often used at Alternative Solutions to accelerate progress across multiple treatment modalities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About EFT Tapping Therapy

EFT has been studied in over 100 peer-reviewed research papers and several meta-analyses. It consistently shows significant reductions in anxiety, PTSD symptoms, depression, and phobias โ€” with effect sizes that meet APA criteria for evidence-based treatments. The exact mechanism is still debated, but the outcomes are well-documented. Many skeptics change their minds when they experience a measurable SUDS drop during their first session.
Almost everyone feels a little self-conscious the first time โ€” and almost everyone forgets about it completely once they feel the shift. Your therapist will guide you through it in a matter-of-fact, supportive way. By round two, most clients are entirely focused on what's happening with their emotional state, not how they look.
For acute distress โ€” a specific fear, a fresh emotional wound, or a triggered memory โ€” relief is often felt within a single session, sometimes within minutes. For deeper or more complex issues, EFT works best as part of a broader treatment plan over several sessions. Simple phobias have been resolved in as few as 1โ€“3 sessions. Complex trauma takes longer.
Yes โ€” EFT is one of the most telehealth-friendly therapy modalities available. Because the client does their own tapping, the physical distance of video doesn't reduce effectiveness at all. Many clients actually prefer telehealth EFT because they can practice in their own space, which is often where their triggers occur.
Largely yes โ€” the basic protocol is widely shared and publicly available. The difference is that working with a licensed therapist trained in EFT allows you to address deeper, more complex emotional material safely, combine EFT with other clinical techniques, and receive guidance tailored to your specific patterns rather than generic scripts.
Both use bilateral or rhythmic stimulation to reduce emotional distress, but the mechanisms differ. EMDR uses guided eye movements (or taps/sounds) while the client focuses on a traumatic memory โ€” it follows a highly structured 8-phase protocol. EFT uses self-administered tapping on acupressure points while voicing the issue. At Alternative Solutions, we often use both in combination for trauma work.
EFT is billed as standard psychotherapy within a broader treatment plan, which is typically covered by any plan that includes mental health benefits. We are in-network with Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Carelon, Cigna, Florida Blue, Meritain, Optum, Oscar Health, UMR, and UnitedHealthcare. Self-pay is $150 per session with a sliding scale available.
Absolutely โ€” and we actively teach it. EFT is one of the most transferable tools in our toolkit. By your second or third session, most clients can self-administer tapping independently on mild-to-moderate distress. You leave with a skill that works in the car, at work, at home, at 3am โ€” anytime you need it.
