Trauma Doesn't Have to Be the Rest of Your Story

Trauma is any experience that overwhelms your ability to cope โ€” leaving behind emotional, mental, and physical imprints that can shape how you see yourself and the world for years afterward. It doesn't require a dramatic event. Chronic stress, childhood neglect, loss, abuse, accidents, and medical crises all qualify.

What separates trauma-informed therapy from standard counseling is the starting point. Rather than asking "what's wrong with you?", we ask "what happened to you?" โ€” and we build everything from there with safety, choice, and compassion at the center of every session.

Troy Bishop is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) and, as a veteran and retired first responder, brings both clinical expertise and lived experience to this work. He understands from the inside how trauma takes hold โ€” and how the right approach helps release it.

Types of Trauma We Treat

Trauma Shows Up in Many Forms

You don't need a diagnosis to deserve support. If an experience still affects how you feel, think, or move through the world โ€” that's reason enough to seek care.

Combat & Military Trauma

Deployment, combat exposure, moral injury, military sexual trauma, and the complex transition back to civilian life.

๐Ÿš’
First Responder & Critical Incident Trauma

Cumulative trauma from police, fire, EMS, and emergency work โ€” including line-of-duty exposure and critical incident stress.

๐Ÿ‘ถ
Childhood & Developmental Trauma

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), abuse, neglect, abandonment, and unstable home environments that shaped how you see yourself.

๐Ÿ’”
Relational & Attachment Trauma

Emotional, physical, or sexual abuse within relationships, betrayal trauma, coercive control, and deep attachment wounds.

๐Ÿฅ
Medical & Health Trauma

Traumatic diagnoses, surgical events, ICU experiences, chronic illness, and healthcare experiences that left lasting fear or distress.

๐Ÿš—
Accidents & Sudden Loss

Vehicle accidents, workplace injuries, natural disasters, and the sudden or traumatic loss of someone important to you.

๐Ÿ”
Complex & Chronic Trauma (C-PTSD)

Prolonged, repeated trauma that disrupts identity, relationships, and emotion regulation โ€” often beginning in childhood or adolescence.

๐Ÿ˜ถ
Secondary & Vicarious Trauma

Trauma absorbed through repeated exposure to others' suffering โ€” common in caregivers, therapists, journalists, and family members of survivors.

๐ŸŒŠ
Community & Systemic Trauma

Collective trauma from racial violence, discrimination, community disasters, and systemic experiences that affect identity and safety.

Is This You?

Signs You May Still Be Carrying Trauma

Unprocessed trauma doesn't always look like flashbacks. It often shows up quietly โ€” in patterns, reactions, and feelings you can't quite explain. If any of these resonate, you deserve support.

Emotional numbness or shutdown
Feeling constantly "on guard"
Difficulty trusting others
Nightmares or sleep disturbances

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Trauma Therapy

No โ€” and this is one of the most important things to understand. Trauma-informed therapy, particularly EMDR and EFT, doesn't require you to narrate every painful detail. We work at your pace, with your comfort and safety as the primary guide. Many clients are relieved to discover that effective trauma processing can happen without full verbal disclosure.
Some emotional activation can occur as we begin processing, which is normal and expected. However, our approach prioritizes your window of tolerance โ€” we always build stabilization and coping skills before any trauma processing begins. Your therapist monitors your state closely and adjusts the pace when needed. Most clients feel more grounded, not destabilized, after sessions.
Absolutely. Trauma has no expiration date โ€” the brain stores unprocessed memories in a way that keeps them emotionally raw regardless of how much time has passed. In many cases, older, long-carried trauma responds very well to treatment. The fact that something happened years ago does not reduce its impact or your eligibility for effective therapy.
Trauma is the experience of something overwhelming โ€” PTSD is a specific clinical diagnosis that can result from it. You don't need a PTSD diagnosis to benefit from trauma therapy. Many people carry the effects of trauma โ€” hypervigilance, avoidance, intrusive memories, emotional dysregulation โ€” without meeting the full diagnostic criteria for PTSD. If your past affects your present, that's enough.
It depends on the type and complexity of the trauma. Single-incident trauma may resolve in 8 to 12 sessions. Complex or childhood trauma typically requires longer, more gradual work. We give you a realistic estimate after the initial assessment โ€” and adjust as your healing progresses. There's no pressure to rush, and no arbitrary endpoint.
Yes. We offer secure telehealth trauma therapy for clients throughout Florida. All of our modalities โ€” including EMDR, EFT, CBT, and DBT โ€” can be effectively delivered via video session. Many clients find that the privacy and comfort of their own home actually supports trauma processing work.
We are in-network with Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Carelon, Cigna, Florida Blue, Meritain, Optum, Oscar Health, UMR, and UnitedHealthcare. Trauma therapy is billed as standard psychotherapy, so most plans that cover mental health sessions will cover it. Self-pay is $150 per session with a sliding scale available.
Troy Bishop served in the US Armed Forces and worked as a first responder before becoming a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. He doesn't just understand trauma from textbooks โ€” he's lived it. Many clients, especially veterans and first responders, find that working with someone who genuinely "gets it" reduces the barrier to opening up and accelerates the healing process.
