What Is EMDR?

Process Trauma Without Reliving Every Detail

EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — is a structured, evidence-based therapy developed specifically to help the brain process traumatic and distressing memories. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn't require you to describe every painful detail out loud.

Using guided bilateral stimulation — typically rhythmic eye movements, alternating taps, or sounds — EMDR helps your brain "unstick" memories that got frozen in their original, unprocessed state. The memory stays, but the emotional charge attached to it is significantly reduced.

At Alternative Solutions Counseling, EMDR is led by Troy Bishop, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional and Licensed Mental Health Counselor. As a veteran and retired first responder, Troy brings firsthand understanding of how trauma takes root — and how EMDR can help release it.

Our Process

What to Expect in EMDR Treatment

EMDR follows a structured, research-backed protocol. Here's a simplified look at how the journey unfolds from your first session to lasting relief.

History & Planning

We review your history together and identify which memories or experiences are appropriate targets for EMDR work.

Preparation

You'll learn grounding and self-soothing techniques first, so you feel resourced and safe before any trauma processing begins.

Assessment

We identify the specific image, belief, and body sensation connected to the target memory to focus the session.

Reprocessing

Using guided bilateral stimulation, your brain reprocesses the memory while you stay grounded in the present moment.

Installation

A positive, accurate belief replaces the old negative one, strengthening as the distress around the memory decreases.

Closure & Follow-Up

Each session ends with grounding, and we reassess progress together at the start of your next appointment.

Why EMDR?

Why EMDR Works When Talk Therapy Alone Isn't Enough

  • Faster Trauma Resolution

Many clients experience significant relief in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy requires for the same trauma.

  • 🧠
Targets the Root, Not Just Symptoms

EMDR reprocesses the original memory driving your distress instead of only managing the symptoms it causes.

  • 🗣️
No Need to Relive Every Detail

Unlike exposure-based talk therapy, EMDR doesn't require you to narrate the trauma in detail to make progress.

  • 🔬
    Backed by Decades of Research

EMDR is recognized by the World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association as an effective trauma treatment.

  • 🎖️
    Lived Trauma Experience

Your therapist is a veteran and retired first responder who understands trauma from both clinical and personal experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About EMDR Therapy

No. This is one of the biggest misconceptions about EMDR. Unlike traditional talk therapy, you don't need to verbally describe every detail of the traumatic event. Your therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation while you briefly focus on the memory, allowing your brain to reprocess it without extensive verbal disclosure.
It depends on the complexity of the trauma. Single-incident traumas (like a car accident) may resolve in as few as 3 to 6 sessions. Complex or childhood trauma typically requires a longer course of treatment. We'll give you an honest, personalized estimate after your initial assessment.
EMDR is designed to process trauma safely, not relive it at full intensity. Sessions begin with grounding and resourcing techniques so you have tools to stay regulated. While some emotional discomfort can surface during reprocessing, your therapist closely monitors your window of tolerance throughout.
Yes — EMDR is one of the most widely researched and recommended treatments for combat-related PTSD and critical-incident trauma. As a veteran and retired first responder himself, Troy Bishop brings both clinical training and lived experience to this work, which many clients find creates an added layer of trust.
Talk therapy primarily works through verbal processing and cognitive reframing over time. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to directly engage the brain's natural information-processing system, often producing faster shifts in how a traumatic memory is stored and experienced. Many clients combine both approaches for comprehensive care.
We are in-network with Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Carelon, Cigna, Florida Blue, Meritain, Optum, Oscar Health, UMR, and UnitedHealthcare. EMDR is billed as standard psychotherapy, so most plans that cover mental health sessions will cover it. Self-pay is $150 per session with a sliding scale available.
Yes. We offer secure telehealth EMDR sessions for clients throughout Florida using adapted bilateral stimulation techniques that work effectively over video. Many clients find the comfort and privacy of their own home actually supports the reprocessing work well.
If you have a specific memory, event, or experience that still triggers strong emotional or physical reactions when you think about it, EMDR is often an excellent fit. The best way to know for certain is a free consultation, where we'll assess your history and goals together.
